Cleaning path
Upright or portable: choose the cleaning path
Choose an upright for a push-style room-cleaning path and a portable for localized hand-tool work. Tank size alone cannot turn one format into the other.
When an upright earns its storage space
A carpeted room gives an upright floor head a clear role. You move it across the surface, apply the instructed washing routine and make extraction passes. Models with included hoses can also address stairs and upholstery, subject to the material's care instructions. That makes the actual supplied package important.
SmartWash+ combines automatic movement with an 8 foot hose. PowerScrub Deluxe offers SpinScrub and a different trigger routine. AllOut Lux adds its integrated hose and targeted StainShot arrangement. Those are workflow distinctions; we have not measured which cleans a particular stain better.
When a portable is the practical starting point
A portable base and hose let you work close to a sofa spot, stair edge or car seat without maneuvering an upright floor head. The tradeoff is hand-tool coverage. Cleaning a large room by moving a small tool over every strip is a different physical task from pushing a floor washer.
A larger portable such as CleanSlate XL extends its refill routine with a 96 ounce clean tank. It still uses a hand tool. A smaller Spotless Mini has a documented 16 ounce clean tank, which may be enough for the quick spots you actually face.
Look beyond the word portable
Compare dry machine weight with the additional water you will carry. Plan where the base can rest while the tool is in use, and how you will empty recovered liquid afterward. A small body can be useful without a full cupboard measurement; ask for exact dimensions when a shelf opening is essential.
Select the required format in the finder only if it really determines your purchase. A household needing both jobs should require the actual combined floor-head and upholstery package.
